Who is American Hospice?

American Hospice is a family owned company. We opened our doors August 11, 2003. We were certified by the state of Alabama on November 11, 2003. By November 12, 2004 we had admitted over 80 patients and expanded our service area to 10 counties. We are a small company, however, we have experienced rapid growth. Because 70% of our referrals come from friends and family members of our past and present patients we can proudly say, "We Believe in Quality Care and it Shows!"

Who is Eligible for Hospice?

Any patient who, depending on the physicians prognosis, has a terminal illness and if the terminal illness runs its normal course has a life expectancy of six months or less. In addition the patient must understand there is no cure for this illness. Treatment will be for pain / symptom control and to improve their quality of life. With the patient's physician's approval, a hospice nurse is available to assess the patient and determine if he / she is hospice appropriate.

A patient can be referred for hospice if they have:

  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • COPD / Emphysema
  • Liver Failure
  • ALS
  • AIDS
  • Debility / Failure to thrive
  • Alzheimer / Dementia
  • Renal Failure
  • Cancer
  • CVA
  • Other

If you are unsure if a specific diagnosis is covered under hospice benefits please contact our office and one of our nurses will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

How Much Does Hospice Cost?

Generally, American Hospice patients never pay for any of our services. Many patients are eligible for hospice benefits through Medicare and / or Medicaid. Most managed care and insurance companies also have hospice benefits and American Hospice handles all aspects of billing related to hospice care. We also receive donations from local companies, families and fund raisers. If absolutely necessary, private pay can be arranged as well. Yet, American Hospice will never deny an eligible patient for hospice services because of his / her financial situation. Our social workers are able to seek additional funding resources when needed.
